Most people have had one of those awkward undefined relationships in there life.  If you haven’t you are lucky, have really good communication skills, and aren’t afraid to ask questions and be upfront.  Good for you! Seriously! When it comes to questioning relationships I am a huge scaredy-cat.  No matter how comfortable I am with a person and how confident I am that they wont take my questions the wrong way, I still have a hard time questioning the situation.  I know I’m not the only one that feels this way.  Some people don’t like to ask questions because they are afraid of an unexpected or unpleasant answer.  I on the other hand, am afraid of looking like the “crazy girl” or the “clingy girl” with wild expectations and I am afraid of getting an answer I “want to hear,” rather than the truth. I know it sounds ridiculous but some people have a weird way of interpreting things when it comes to relationships.

News Flash: Girls like to be sure of things.  We like clearly defined lines and boundaries.  We like to know if we are on the same page.  We like to know if things are exclusive or if we are going to have to share with someone else. We like to know what we’re supposed to tell people if they ask.  We like to know what is acceptable in public.

There are so many different kinds of relationships out there that it can be very hard to tell what kind you are in.  It’s not always as simple as “single” or “in a relationship” anymore. Now things like “seeing each other” and “friends with benefits” exist.  And then there are “complicated circumstances” like careers or distance or family that keep the relationship undefined.  Are there lines and boundaries to be crossed in any of there types of relationships? What is and isn’t ok? Am I more into this than you are?  There is so much grey, its just crazy.  Some one really need to write a rule book about these things.

Hello Summer!

Alright so I have been really bad at posting anything since I have been home.  I mean it’s summer and I’m busy living life while I have the free time.  Aside from working a lot I have been going out with friends and hanging out with my family.

Last month was really crazy when the flood hit, but we are all working together to get everything back to normal.  My uncle is still dealing with some water damage in his basement but the rest of my family and friends managed to stay safe and dry.  We have dealt with flooding before, but not nearly to this extent. Seeing our city come together to help out neighbors and strangers through effort of physical labour and donations makes me a proud citizen.  I was unable to help out with the cleanup efforts throughout the city but I did get to work an event to raise money for flood relief.  This event alone raised $25,000 for the Red Cross Flood Relief Fund.

The flood came two weeks before the 101st Calgary Stampede, and despite doubts and some negative views about letting the event go ahead, the show went on.  Along with the original theme of Stampede 101, the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth also presented their “Hell or High Water” fundraiser.  T-shirts with the slogan “Hell or High Water” were made and sold online and during the ten days of  the Stampede to raise money for flood relief.  The goal of the fundraiser was to raise money, as well as the spirits of the people looking forward to the annual event.  After the flood there was no doubt the Stampede would go on, and with the help of city workers and volunteers the event went on as is had in years past.  Through T-shirt sales the “Hell or High Water” campaign raised $2.1 million for Red Cross Flood Relief.

After helping out my city, I was able to attend the 101st Calgary Stampede. This stampede week was a little different for me as I acted as a spectator to events I had been a part of for 6 years.  The last 2 years I was part of the Stampede Showband and spent the 10 Days of Stampede performing on the grounds several times every day.  Although I was unable to participate in the band this year I was able to experience being a part of a captive audience.  I was also able to experience the thrill of the midway games and rides, as well as the Stampede night life lit up by bright lights and fireworks.  I was also able to share this new experience with a very good friend of mine.  She came out for a visit and had a taste of Stampede, which she really enjoyed.

Now that the craziness from the flood has died down and Stampede is over, I can get back to normal everyday life.  I am also starting to get ready for school in the fall.  I have found a place to live and a great roommate.  I have also registered for my courses and its going to be a busy year.  For now I am back to work, back to relaxing with friends and back to soaking up the summer while it lasts.

May: Summertime and Country Music

Woohoo its May!  Spring is in full swing and summer is almost here! I have already been able to pull out my shorts a few times.  I'm in full summer prep mode this month by watching my favourite summer movie and listening to my favourite summertime music.

I watch a lot of Rom-Coms in the summer because they make me happy.  I've seen a bunch of cute movies lately.
Movies: This Means War, What's your Number, Safe Haven, Crazy Stupid Love

When summer comes around I listen to A LOT of country music.  I've finally learned to use YouTube to my advantage.  Yippy!
This is the music I have been living my life to the past few weeks.  It's all country because that what I love :)
Music: Summertime and Country Music

My Pinning this month has also been inspired by summer.  Most pins are summer outfits and hair styles as well as light summer recipes.
Check out: "i wear what i want" and "being pretty"

Thats all for this month's "Everything I like!"  I haven't had too much spare time, but thats what I filled it with.  :)

The "Perfect" Date

Everybody has an idea of their perfect date. Usually these ideas blossom from our favourite movie, TV shows or books.  The long walk on the beach, the good conversation and the perfectly placed kiss at sunset, dressing to the nines and going for a fancy dinner, or just getting cozy by the fire on a warm summer night.  Each of these dates will of course have the perfect music playing in the background at just the right moments and everything will just seem too perfect for it to be reality.  That’s because it is!  Life is completely unscripted and ideas of perfection based on movies will almost always be impossible to recreate.

I am not saying I don’t have my own ideas about that perfect date.  Truth be told I have more than a few ideas floating around but none of them are planned to a tee for 2 reasons
(1) Avoiding disappointment.  I have been on a few dates where things didn’t go as smoothly as they had been planned and someone was left disappointed.   Disappointment then lead to a serious mood killer and well, it didn’t end well.
(2) Planning is LAME! I like to make things up as I go.  It’s way more fun that way.  It’s also an indication of whether the person you are with is on the same page as you are.  Opposites attract.. but not polar opposites.  Also if they aren’t up to going with the flow every once in a while, they are probably no fun.

My ideas of the perfect date are simple. They have a location and events that make each one just as unique and fun as the last.
The Perfect Date:
~ An evening with ice cream and a walk along a riverbank and through the forest. Finding a spot along the river to look at the stars, laugh and dance.
~ An afternoon on the road with music to sing along to.  A small town to stop for lunch. Exploring the town and the surrounding areas.
~ An evening in with a home cooked meal flowed by movies and popcorn
~ At a theme park going on the biggest roller coasters and every other ride. Eating cotton candy and playing fair games.
~ Hiking to the top of a mountain with a picnic lunch.
~ A night downtown taking in the beauty of the city lights.

The one thing almost everyone wants out of the perfect date is the perfect kiss.  It may come at the beginning of the date, at the end of the date or at any point in between.

Some of my ideas are more planned out than others but none of them are specific.  Once in a  while a it's nice to have a reservation and a plan as something to look forward to.  On any date I want to face challenges with laughter and I don't want to worry about the time.  I want it to be fun and adventurous.

2 More Days

Blehh! So I have two days of class left in this semester before it’s time to start writing finals.  At this point I have finished learning the course content and the class time I have left will be designated review sessions.  Sometimes these review classes can be helpful, but other times people like to ask simple questions that can be answered by simply opening your text book or looking through you class notes.
Once classes are finished it’s time to get down to the hard core studying, right?  Yes!  But that only works if you have a forgiving exam schedule that allows you a sufficient amount of time to study for each exam.  This term I am not so fortunate.  I have four of my finals in the first four days of the 2 week exam period and a 7 day break before my last final.  Needless to say, I started studying last week.  I was lucky to be finished  with my midterms and assignments on March 14th,  which gave me more than enough time study while class was still in session.  Although I have used this time to study for my first few exams, I have not been able to get into the “final exam  studying mindset.”  Hopefully by the end of the day on Friday I will be able to get myself in the zone of studying  like a crazy person.
This is not the first time I have had a series of exams like this.  Initially a series like this causes lots of stress, frustration. It also brings up the big question of, “how am I supposed to study for everything in such a short time?”  The most effective way I have found is starting early and switching your subject of focus every day or few days. To ensure I don’t miss studying for any classes, I also like to create a rough schedule of which subjects I am going to study for on certain days.  This allows for enough time to study for each subject and helps to avoid cramming for a subject that may have been pushed aside. We all have exams that require less studying which allows for more time to look at other, more difficult course material.  Once I have gone through all or most of my material, I use the day before my exam to go over everything once, focusing on the areas that are most difficult.
I am no stranger to stress during exam time. When I get into the zone of studying, I am able to focus my attention for hours at a time.  I usually start to stress the day before the exam if I feel like I have to cram.  In the weeks and days before my finals I reduce stress levels by taking breaks to make lunch or dinner and by engaging in some form of exercise.  Exercise for stress relief doesn’t always mean taking an hour out of your study time to go to they gym.  During my final review day I find that leaving my room to go to the library or to walk around the block beneficial in different ways. First it gives your body a break from sitting hunched over a table, allowing it to move.  It also gives your eyes time to relax and your brain time to retain the information that you have been studying.  Giving your mind and body a break form studying is most effective when you focus on what you are doing during the break, rather than worrying about the time you are taking away from study.
Final exam time is stressful but it’s not the end of the world.  When I feel completely overwhelmed, I take a minute to think about how close I am to being done.  I remind myself that I am in the final push to the end of the year and there is no reason to slow down.  Summer will soon be here and I will be at home enjoying my vacation time.

Easter Sunday Hike

This Easter Sunday, a few friends and I decided to take a hike.  Knox Mountain is perfectly situated on the outskirts of the city and right on the lake.  The mountain has a number of trails that vary in length and difficulty as well as road access that ends at a lookout half way up the mountain.
Adventurously, we decided to start our hike at the bottom of the mountain and take the Apex Trail (one of the easier ones) to the top.  Our trail led us up the mountain through grassy areas and small stands of trees to a lovely little gazebo at the top.  We then ventured around to the other side of the mountain and found a beautiful spot overlooking the water where we sat and enjoyed the view before having to head back down.
When I was younger I used to go out to the mountains with my family.   We would hike up Johnston Canyon and explore other easy mountain trails in the area. I remembered how much  I enjoyed the feeling of being lost in and exploring the forest.  This weekend's outing has made me want to adventure out and explore trails and areas I've never been to.

14" Lighter

Alright so yesterday (March 28) was a huge day for my dear friend and roommate.  As some of you may know April is the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Month for cancer research and awareness.  In support of this, our school hosts an annual Cut for the Cure at the end of March.  This year my roommate decided it was time to part with her long luscious locks that she had been growing out to support cancer research.  She was hoping to do the cut last year but felt she was not emotionally ready for the cut and that she had not done sufficient fundraising for the cause.  She started collecting donations casually throughout the year and more seriously when the school had announced the date of the event.  In total she raised close to $500 and 100% support from her family and friends and she cut and donated 14" of hair!
Cancer is one of the leading killers in Canada.  The majority of people know of someone who has fought or is fighting cancer.  Donations to the Cancer Society will fund ground-breaking research on all types of cancer and provide free information and support services for patients and caregivers.  It will also be used to educate Canadians about cancer prevention and early detection of the disease, and advocate public policies that prevent cancer and help those living with it.  Hair donations (shaved head or minimum of 8 inches cut) are used to make wigs for women and children that have suffered hair loss due to repeated bouts of treatment.
The event put on by our school is an effort to raise further awareness of the prevalence of cancer among Canadians, and to raise money to help the Cancer Society continue its services.  It gives students the opportunity to raise money and cut or shave their hair for the cause and donate for chance to pie your RA.  The event also provides students information on ways to prevent cancer and support someone in their life that may be suffering from the disease.

I would never be able to lose all that hair.  This girl is AMAZING!

We have all lost someone to cancer.  For more information or to donate visit the Canadian Cancer Society online and click DONATE!

Summer Goals

Alright so summer is almost here which for most people means transitioning from the school routine to the work routine.  It also means having time to relax in the sun and going to parties with your friends.  In amongst all the work and all the fun, I like to set my self summer goals.  I try to set goals that can be easily accomplished over the span of 4 months and that take up little to no extra time in my daily life.  Last year my goal was to stop biting my fingernails and keep them looking nice all the time, which was very successful.

This year I have two goals:
(1) Keep up with the exercise I have been doing while at school
(2) Stop straitening my hair and let it grow.

This year was my first full year in the kinesiology program.  The content for the majority of my courses focused on exercise and its importance in different aspects of life, which encouraged me to start living a more active lifestyle.  It took me a few months to find the right program for me and get into an exercise routine, that still left me with enough time and energy for my school work.  I started this process in November and I have been able to keep a solid routine for about a month and a half now.  I have learned both in class and form experience, that exercise is an excellent source of stress relief and it increases self efficacy and overall day time energy.  Exercise is also an important part in a healthy lifestyle.  In the past, my summers have consisted of very high levels of activity due to my involvement in marching showband.  This summer I will not be able to rely on the band, so the continuation of my current routine is especially important.

My second goal will be much easier and require less effort to accomplish.  For years I have said “I am not going to straiten my hair this summer and I'm going to let it grow without killing the ends.”  This, my friends, is the year that I will FINALLY accomplish this goal.  This year is different from past summer because I will be working.  I wont need to have sleek, strait, performance ready hair, thus reducing the need to kill it with my straitener.  This is an easy goal that will take little time and effort to accomplish.  I will just have to be patient.

"You're from like 2001"

I get very excited when I decide to try new things and this is one of them.  Eventually my excitement about blogging will calm down and I will stop writing about blogging and start writing about other things  but for now I’m going to use it to my advantage.
After I had published my first post I immediately told all my friends and everyone on Facebook about it.  My favourite reaction was from a good friend who said to me, “You're from like 2001,” which at first I thought was funny and strange.  After I thought about it for a while I realized he had a reason to mock me in this way.  People don’t make a blog posts about things that they are doing unless it is also useful for a good chunk of the population.  Most blogs these day are all about how to have perfect hair or the perfect body, make the perfect meal or find the perfect gift for someone special.  If people want to share their thoughts and feeling they make stupid rant videos or videos where they hold up flash cards for you to read.  They post them on Facebook and Twitter for all there “friends” and “followers” to see, but the majority of the people reading their posts either don’t know who they are or don’t really care about that they have to say.
Maybe I am going back to 2001, before Facebook , YouTube and Twitter, when a blog was used as an online journal.  I am going back to a time where I don’t have to condense my thoughts into 140 characters.  I am going back to a time where the people will read what I have to say because they want to, not because it is the next thing on their news feed.  I lived in 2001 ( I was 8 and I don’t really remember it) so I can go back there now.  One day everyone will go back to it for one reason or another.

Everything I Like: March

When asked what I like and what my favourite things are I can give a different answer depending on the time of year and the different things that are going on in my life.  What I would like to do is create a monthly update on the music, movies, TV shows, celebrities and pin-boards that I am in to.

This month I am coming up on the end of my second year of university.  This means I am about to fight to balance my need to study the fact that I just want everything to be over and go home for the summer.  During this time I usually find a good playlist to study to, a couple of feel good movies and shows and inspirational pin-boards to give my mind a break.

March is when I usually start listening to country music to bring me home and to my childhood.  As the end of the school year approaches, everyone starts getting ready and excited for summer and we all start making our grand summer plans. In my case summer means home and home means 10 days of Stampede to look forward to.  Country music doesn’t only get me through the push to the end of exams, but it get me ready to go when summer comes around.
Artists: Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Jake Owen, Florida Georgia Line, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw
Songs: Cruise – Florida Georgia Line, Take a Little Ride – Jason Aldean, Summer Jam – Jake Owen, Even if it Breaks Your Heart  - Eli Young Band

Recently I have been enjoying cute, feel good movies.  These movies allow me to spend some time with my roommates, get away from my books and notes and have a well deserved laugh.  I usually watch some of my favorite movies that I can sing along to or quote.
Recently Watched: Princess Diaries 1 and 2, Pitch Perfect and She’s the Man

I don’t watch a lot of TV in the summer because I’m not a huge fan of all the reality shows. I don’t really care about the dumb things people do when they are “forced” to live in a house together, who can survive the longest on an island or who is going to be the 20th American Idol.  I do have a few guilty pleasure reality shows that I watch every week.
Reality TV shows: Dancing with the Stars, The Bachelor/Bachelorette and So You Think You Can Dance

When my day is done I find myself on Pinterest.  Because summer is coming, I have been most interested in looking at the newest styles for summer, spring and summer themed nail art, easy summer recipes and fun outdoor summer activities.   I also use my Pinterest to look at some of my favourite celebrities.

My Roommate is Writing a Book

My roommate is writing a book.  This girl is a second year English major and she has already immersed herself in writing her first book.  She is all about adventure, people in hiding and love triangles.  Her overactive imagination and bad ass dreams, mixed with the stories and books she has read throughout her life have given her the ability to something I could only ever dream of.  Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, the Chaos Walking Series, and the Studio Ghibli films she watched as a child have inspired her imagination and passion for writing.

The dedication and time spent in the creation and adaptation of the story is incredible.  In the past 6 months she has managed to spit out 9 completed chapters and has notes and plans for at least 10 more. I can depend on her to be in her room writing every night after about 10 pm and some times she will stay up until 5 am getting lost among her ideas.  She has characters with detailed back stories, and a whole new land.  She has notebooks full of notes on characters and their relationships and drawings of settings, clothes and a map of a whole new land.  Like any good adventure story her characters have culture and segregation, social classes, a best friend vs. the “mysterious new guy” love triangle and a journey to claim what is rightfully hers.
In the process of writing this book she has also started planning for 4 additional books that will include some of her favourite characters.
I have read the prologue, the first chapter and little snippets through the writing process and I am excited to read the finished product.
To read her first chapter “Red Dream” follow the link!  You wont regret it! I promise!

I'm Writing a Blog!

Alright so this is a very new thing for me.  Its Monday night and I’m sitting in my dorm room with nothing to do so I figured why not start a blog. I have no idea if anyone will care about what sort of ridiculous things happen to me but that’s not the point. The point is to have a place where I can share my stories with people who choose to read them. I’m new to this and since this is my first post I guess I should share a little bit about me and my life.

I am a 100% Canadian girl, born and raised in the prairies.  That basically means I apologize for everything whether I need to or not and I love everything country.  Although I am a city girl, I have always thought about what it would be like living in a small town, where everyone knows everyone else.  This probably come from the copious amount of country music I listen to between March and September.

Anyways I will stick more to the basics for now and keep the fun stuff for future posts.

My life is nothing special.  I don’t live a dangerous, secret or scandalous life.  I am a Kinesiology student and I spend more time watching sports than I do playing them.  I live in a dorm, for the time being, with 3 roommates. We get along well and have some pretty fun times together.  My friends are also great in their own ways and we are all a little bit crazy sometimes. I like to have fun.  My kind of fun usually consists of dancing and singing at the top of my lungs whether I’m in a club or at home alone.  Music has always influenced my thoughts and dreams.  I love musicals.  I play too much bubble speed on facebook. I am a Facebooker, an instagrammer and a pinner, follow me @katileen, and I have a twitter account that I use once every 6 months.  I don’t read much.  I like cheesy movies.  More than anything in the world I believe in love and magic.  I love LOVE .  I’m an only child = independent, but I do take suggestions of others very seriously as well, ultimately I’m going to do what I think is the best thing.  Boys are stupid but I’ve always got one on my mind for one reason or another.  I always have something to say about my hair and how it could be better.  I usually refer to it as “the beast” or “the thing” on my head.  I need to live somewhere with a beach I can sit on year round. I love celebrities aka they are nice to look at and pretend I’m going to marry them (no gossip).

Mostly I will write about my thoughts and feeling, sometimes events of the days, weeks etc.  I will talk about the new things I am into and the music and movies I love.  I also want to use it as a progress measurement for some goals (like my current work out and hair growth goals) but that wont be the main focus.
